Violins

Anything you need to know about violins.

does anyone know where I can purchase a cardboard or foam violin for a beginning student?

Thanks!

You’re kidding, right? I seriously hope you’re not talking about something like that to actually PLAY on… Really, I hope you’re talking about a toy, and not something to seriously try to learn on…

Go to the local music store and rent an instrument for a while for the student. Toys will never be seen by a young child as anything more than what they are: toys. And as such, the kid will never take it seriously if you give them one and expect them to learn to play on it.

What should I look for in an antique violin?

This is a question for violinists and collectors of fine stringed instruments:
Let’s say I was at an auction and an obviously old violin (with a bow and case) was being displayed before it was put up for bid. As a complete novice (who is interested in learning to play and has an appreciation for the history and beauty of these instruments), what should I be looking for when examining the instrument? Please be specific. Don’t say "look for good quality" or "make sure it’s in good condition". I don’t know what good quality or good condition look like. That’s what I’m asking. What makes this violin a good or bad investment? What are some signs that it’s been well taken care of? Played regularly? Well-made and well-designed? True antique or knock-off? Also, any links to good guides or info pages would be useful.

for any string instrument, you should be looking for good tonal quality. This is, however, only one of MANY factors that goes into investing in an instrument. if you are just starting to play, I would not suggest going out to buy a really nice antique, but collecting is fine.

First thing you have to decide is how old you want it to be. If you want a Baroque Violin (the oldest), then that is a completely from most other Violins. you may want to look inside the Violin to see the name of the maker and when it was made (it will be on the label placed below the f-hole on the left).

If you are going to play it eventually, you want to have a really nice-sounding instrument. This decision is opinion oriented, but a novice shouldn’t be alone in making a decision like this. Get a friend who is an advanced string musician to help you find the right instrument. A Violin that rings and has a sultry tone, in my opinion, is optimal.

many old instruments need to be repaird, and that can be costly. if you see a Violin that you want to buy, but is in need of reperations, you have to consider whether or not it will be worth it. Keep in mind that instruments often sound even better aftr being repaired.

good luck!

How can i keep the pegs of my violin from slipping? Could you recommend a violin repair shop in d Philippines?

i am studying to become a builder so i hope im right atleast it works for me: try using the graphite from a pencil gently on the peg with it pulled out a little ways then the graphite should act as lubercant to help you put more pressure/friction just as soon as you get past the graphite

What online site is good to post a violin I have for sale?

I know craigslist and ebay, but I wondered if there was a site specifically for musical instruments?

Unless it is an inexpensive student violin, it will be challenging selling it through a website. People want to see, hear and play the instrument, because even two instruments of the same model by the same maker will be different from each other. It is cumbersome to respond to many different ads and go many different places to try instruments and see if you like them.

My recommendation would be to check your local yellow pages for a dealer who will sell the instrument on consignment for you. They can be much more efficient at unloading the instrument, because musicians typically come and try many instruments at one time in order to pick out what they like. They will probably be able to get more for the instrument than you will, so their percentage of the sale won’t hurt so much.

Another option is to contact orchestra directors at local schools regarding the instrument you have for sale. If you can get them to allow you to come to them so they can see the instrument, they may be able to recommend a buyer for you.

A worthy violin for sale?

I am a 8 year violinist who is looking for an upgrade. Unfortunately, In Peoria, Il there isn’t a whole lot of violin shops. I am looking for a violin around $1000. Please recommend a violin store in Illinois, or near Illinois, or a good trustworthy website. I know there are a lot of violin shops in Chicago and in St. Louis, but most of them are way out of my price range. My level playability is around Advanced to Intermediate just in case that helps. Thanks for your help.

Go to southweststrings.com or swstrings.com whichever
they have really good prices and don’t sell crappy instruments i have used them for about 3 years…
here are some good violins

Beginner violins that are fairly cheap but are of decent quality?

Are there any violins that are full size for beginners that are fairly cheap but are still of a high enough quality to sound good. Cheap acoustic and electric models if you can off some examples. I’m a guitarist who wants to try something a bit different.

What are some good violin brands?

I’m starting my second year of middle school and I want to get a violin at about the price from $300 to about $500. Are there some good brands between those prices?

I would look at the Howard Core. See:

help on violin scratches?

i got a bunch of scratches on my rental violin. now, i’m about to be charged $200 for these scratches by the rental person. is there any way to remove these scratches for less than $15 with some sort of substance or something liket that?

Go to your local music store (or just go online, see websites below) and purchase some instrument polish. It’s usually about $3-6, depending on the brand. When applying the product I would recommend using an instrument/glasses cleaner. If you don’t have one you can buy them for about $5.

Just remember that polish won’t necessarily fix the scratches (please be more careful next time!) but it will hide them or make them less noticeable. The only way to remove them is to have it re-varnished, but that is expensive and only works to a certain extent.

Good luck!
