How much would it cost to purchase a bridge for a violin?

Posted on September 29th, 2009 by admin in violin purchase | 2 Comments »

Ok my violin bridge broke and I was wanting to know how much one would be. And once I get the bridge how would I get it placed back to where it needs to be? And if I have to take it somewhere how much would that cost?

You really can’t just buy a bridge and put it on; it has to be shaped for that particular instrument. It’s not that expensive. Of course, if you absolutely cannot afford to go to a luthier, see:

Where can I buy an old, cheap Violin case?

Posted on September 29th, 2009 by admin in cheap violins | 15 Comments »

I’m looking to get hold of an old, cheap full size violin case, in pretty much any condition (No violin needed). E bay isn’t helping. Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I’d say an instrument shop or a pawn shop. Break out the Yellow Pages and call around to save yourself some foot work. Good luck with your search!

Keyboard vs. Violin vs. price vs.lessons?

Posted on September 29th, 2009 by admin in violin rentals | 1 Comment »

1. I played the violin but don’t really want to anymore, so which should I do, violin or keyboard?
2. How much is a rental keyboard?
3.My friends mom teaches piano, would she also be able to teach keyboard?

Learning keyboard is pretty much the same as piano. But actually playing is alittle different. Is smaller, but its all about what you want it to sound like. A keyboard is just there to make the piano have differnent sounds and ryhthms on it. They, of course, are more for bands, so learning chords are important. Depending on where you go for lessons, they should be the same for any instrument. For renting, I have not heard of places that rent keyboards, but then again we dont live in the same place, lol. Its the differnet instruments that cost different with renting. If you find a place the rents keyboards it shouldnt be that expensive becuz its popularity. Good luck!

Where can I find information about old violins and where they come from?

Posted on September 29th, 2009 by admin in auction violin | 2 Comments »

My grandfather bought me a violin at an auction. The person who was holding the auction asked for it back because it went for $50. He said that it was an antique violin from the 1880s. I don’t know if I can trust this source of information. The case has a GSB Violin Case emblem on the bottom. Where can I find information? I am desperate in finding correct info on this violin.

It is nearly impossible — actually it is impossible — to appraise an instrument via verbal description, even if accompanied with photographs — over the internet.

What you should do is take it to a reputable luthier. A luthier is a person who repairs, in some cases makes, and also appraises stringed instruments. There is usually one or more in every community. I would not indicate that you might want to sell it but rather, tell them you want to have it appraised for insurance purposes. Sometimes there is a small fee associated with this service, like $20, but they might do it for free.

What is the classical court case involving mistake of value on a Stradivarius violin?

Posted on September 29th, 2009 by admin in sales violin | 4 Comments »

My Business Law professor was telling us about this case that he lost and no longer knows how to find. He talks about it in the text book he wrote.
"In the classical case of the sale of a Stradivarius violin, the parties agreed to buy and sell a violin for a nominal amount of money. Later it is discovered that the violin was no ordinary violin, but a Stradivarius Violin worth millions of dollars. The seller sues to recover the Stradivarius violin, arguing that it was a mutual mistake of fact.
The holding of the case was that they were not mistaken of the fact. They both knew that they were buying and selling a particular violin and that the court does not decide the value of an item. Hence, the contract could not be rescinded and someone became very rich…

In researching, I came across the court case that the first 2 posters mention, but me being an apparent idiot, I went by the information posted in the question and wasted a good 20 minutes of my time. Thank you.

BTW, if the info is in the book your law prof wrote, why not just get the book??

What kind of job should a violinist like me get if I want to change careers?

Posted on September 29th, 2009 by admin in violins on sale | 4 Comments »

I have no high school diploma or high school degree.

Skills/experience:
Intermediate/advanced general computer skills
Music – 9 years!
Courier/driving
Forklift experience
Some auto repair
Leadership
Stage presence/theater
Music teaching
Physically strong/agile
Cash register
People/telephone skills

I hate sales jobs.

Maybe I should to something totally different and out of the blue. Violin teaching/performing isn’t paying the bills let alone the self employment tax.
I have a wife and kid.
I have been thinking customer service for a cell phone company would be just the thing. (?) Good advice from all, though.

Sounds like you found yourself in the taking care of yourself trap. You took something that you (I assume) love, violin, and made a job out of it. The problem with these sort of hobbie/jobs is the kind of value they demand from the rest of the business world. How many violinist are there in the world? How many companies are 100% dependant on violinist talent to make profits?

Being responsible for a family changes all the rules. I would love to be a rockstar, but instead, I’m a manager for a class one railroad. Find a trade, skill or talent that is worth paying for. Make goals. Find help. Strangers can make a good support group for annonomous questions you may be too embarrassed to ask family and friends.

I’m sure you qualify for education assistance programs. I had the military pay for my education. This may be an option for you? Most federal funded carrier retraining programs are managed by your state department. Research the web for details.

The first step to living a more successful lifestyle is to WANT a more successful lifestyle. Now you need to make a plan and set goals on how you are going to get there. Ask lots of questions and do lots of research. Have a goal on what you want to be doing and where it may lead you in 10-15 years. Ask other successful people how they got there. Have a back up plan.

Don’t give up. You know you can teach violin, let’s see what else you can do.

My violin has chipped paint. What can I do without going to a shop?

Posted on September 29th, 2009 by admin in shop violin | 4 Comments »

One day, I took my violin out of her case. I didn’t do anything that might have chipped some paint on the violin. But I saw a little on the front near the f-hole. I really can’t afford going into a shop t have it repaired. Any suggestions?

Do not worry about it. Have a look at some really old and beautiful violins. Half the varnish is often worn off and it will be covered in scratches. It does not affect the sound at all.

If it is a modern cheap violin it is just polyurethane varnish anyway so you could touch it up yourself if it is worrying you.

If it is an expensive violin then it is probably a spirt or oil varnish and this is best left to the professionals.

I want to start taking adult beginner’s Violin and Piano lessons in London. Any recommendations for schools?

Posted on September 29th, 2009 by admin in violin prices | 2 Comments »

I have thought about adult colleges such as City Lit, it seems to be held in pretty high regard from what I’ve read. I would appreciate any other recommendations on schools and colleges that offer violin and piano lessons that range from reasonably priced to cheap and also have a good reputation.

Thank you in advance.

You normally learn an instrument from a private tutor, not at a school. Your local library should have a list of violin teachers in your area.
