Does anyone know a website where I can purchase a real baroque violin?

I’ve asked around about it and a lot of people have told me to be careful about buying them online because some people will try to sell you just a regular violin without the chin rest. So if anyone has actually bought one could you please tell me where you got it?

Try this English company – "The Early Music Shop."

http://www.earlymusicshop.com/

They stock a wonderful range of historical instruments – including Baroque violins and accessories. I’m sure that if you email them, they will make some recommendations.

And their "used instrument agency" often offers a bargain or two.

Good luck in locating an instrument!

VIOLIN questions? We bought a violin online? ?

My sister bought a violin online in trademe.co.nz for $35 (auction)
but is $300 in stores (as the seller says:P) , BRAND NEW

ANYWAY

I tried playing (as if) the violin :D butttt to my dismay,

1.) (queston erased, dont wanna edit)
2.) How do we know if the violin is playable…what do you call the
BOW or something the stick you use to play the violin lol
3.) is it possible to be self taught playing the violin?
4.) is it really necessary that you can read notes

ANY TIPS FOR STARTERS?

D:

nomoney for lessonsss
but to my dismay*, I tried playing with the bow (imitated those on tv haha) there was NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo
sound.

why is that?

Okay, first off, yes, you have to read music to play. Not everyone does, but you can’t truly play the instrument to it’s full extent without knowing how to read music. I’m sure many people disagree, but I play two instruments (flute and piano) and I’ve seen many disastrous attempts by people who THINK they can play without reading music, and it’s not pretty. I don’t play violin, but I figure that you’ll be a lot better off if you take lessons. Most aren’t really all that pricey. $15-$20 a lesson isn’t really that bad, if you ask me. (That’s how much they are where I live) For the 2nd question, you don’t, unless someone who knows how to play it does. If you bought it for $30, you probably got what you paid for. at least you’re not out much if it’s a crap violin and doesn’t work. I wasn’t trying to sound rude, but there’s not really another way to put it.

I’ve seen this place on Hillsborough Street (between West Street and Glenwood Ave) in downtown, called "The Violin Maker".
It’s a cute little shop…I hear they refurbish used violins a lot, too. That may be a good place to start.

Violin question for music teachers!!??!?

Hi,
I’m wondering what size your arm has to be for a Full size violin. Currently i have a 3/4, but it’s rental. I would like my own, personal violin. What is the arm length (in inches) for a full size violin? And any certain brands of violin to look out for, or to get?

thanks! :)

im not a music teacher or anything..
here’s something you can do to figure out your size
take out the shoulder rest from your 3/4 violin and stretch out your arms so you’re facing scroll. if your hand reaches beyond the scroll… you’re ready for a full size

what is the best soundpost setter to get for violin?

I am learnin to repair violins, and I am taking classes, so don’t say take it to a violin shop. If you could post pictures or something, that would be great. There are many different kinds that I have found, but i’m not sure what the best one is. Thank you!!! :)

If you’re learning to repair violins, your mentor should’ve taught you this.
Are you asking the best BRAND of soundpost? Or the best size? Wood?

Where can I get a violin or fiddle for cheap?

I don’t think I could get one at a second-hand store or a yard sale.

It would have to be in real life, in good shape, and cheap enough for a college student to purchase it.

So where could I get one, and how much should I expect to pay for it?

Actually you might be able to find one at a second hand store such as Goodwill. or check your local pawn shops. just don’t go to a cheap second hand store as they don’t check things out like Goodwill and the salvation Army stores do

How much is a regular violin?

I want too start learning violin but i don’t know the smart price for one.

if you are just starting out. And I mean ‘just’. Then I would start on a Stentor Student. They are very cheap and as the name suggests, they are catered for those just starting to learn the violin. Once you get to a reasonable level, about grade 5, then is the time to upgrade to something like a paesold. Stentors are great value for money and great learning instruments. I would particuarly recomend the Stentor Student 2 as I found this a great instrument to start out on.
this is the site for stentor:

http://www.stentor-music.com/stentor%20violins.html

this is a good online shop:

http://www.turnerviolins.co.uk/shop.php?subcategory=Stentor%20Violin%20Outfits

as you will see the Stentor Student 1 is £83
Stentor Student 2 is £120
Stentor Conservatoire is £200
sorry, I don’t know whether you’re in the UK or US so excuse if you use dollars.
I hope that helps.
