That Dog – He’s Kissing Christian.

Official music video for “He’s Kissing Christian”, the first single from Los Angeles band That Dog’s second album “Totally Crushed Out!” (DGC Records, 1995).

Directed by Frank Sacramento.

That Dog:
Anna Waronker (lead vocals, guitar)
Petra Haden (voilin, vocals)
Rachel Haden (bass, vocals)
Tony Maxwell (drums)

Info on That Dog (from allmusic.com:)

The lineup of the Los Angeles-based indie-pop quartet that dog. represented the flowering of a second generation of musical luminaries: singer/guitarist Anna Waronker was the daughter of famed producer and Warner Bros. head Lenny Waronker, while bassist Rachel Haden and her violinist sister Petra were two of the triplet daughters born to jazz titan Charlie Haden.

Friends since high school, the trio first began playing music together in Waronker’s bedroom in the early ’90s. Joined by drummer Tony Maxwell in 1992, that dog. issued their debut double seven-inch on the tiny Magnatone Records, quickly becoming a staple of the L.A. club circuit; a flurry of label interest followed, and the group signed with DGC in 1993. that dog.’s self-titled debut LP appeared in 1994; an energetic and quirky punk-pop effort highlighted by sunny harmonies and the intriguing use of violin and cello, the record became a college radio hit, and the light-hearted video for the lead single “Old Timer” even garnered some MTV airplay.

The follow-up, Totally Crushed Out!, was issued a year later; a concept album wittily exploring the teen angst of unrequited love (packaged to recall a Sweet Valley High romance novel), the record marked a significant maturity in Waronker’s songwriting, evidenced by tracks like “Ms. Wrong” and “He’s Kissing Christian.”

A planned Waronker solo project was scheduled to follow, but instead her more pop-oriented material became the basis for the third that dog. record; co-produced by Brad Wood, the stellar Retreat From the Sun appeared in 1997. The band’s breakup was announced that September.

That’s Incredible! – Friends Of P (early Rentals demo)

That’s Incredible! – Friends Of P. (Demo).

Note: Very first demo of the Rentals hit “Friend of P.” prior to the moog and violins aspect of that recording were added.

That’s Incredible! was the very first incarnation of Weezer bassist Matt Sharp’s side project called The Rentals. Recorded by Tom Grimley at his studio Poop Alley in L.A. in April 1994 (a month prior to the first Weezer record debuting), the ‘That’s Incredible!’ demos form the basis of what would become the first Rentals album ‘Return Of The Rentals’ in 1995.

The line-up of ‘That’s Incredible!’ consisted of Sharp (vocals, bass and lead guitar), Weezer bandmate Patrick Wilson (drums), That Dog’s Rachel Haden (female vocals) and Supersport 2000’s Rod Cervera (rhythm guitar). Out of this line-up, only Sharp and Cervera would become part of The Rentals, as other commitments prevented Haden and Wilson from becoming full-time participants in what would become a more time-consuming project for Sharp once signed to Maverick Records in early 1995.

I want to learn how to play violin. What is a good violin brand to buy and how much does it cost?

Hi

Here is a good link for all your violin questions and a good site to choose among many good violins depending on your budget.

How much should I spend on a new violin?

Posted on November 15th, 2009 by admin in violin purchase | 2 Comments »

I have been playing the violin for 6 years now and I want to purchase a new violin. I already have one now but its more of a beginner violin. Although I have only been playing for 6 years I am a really good player. But because I’ve only been playing for 6 years I don’t think I should spend a drastic amount for the violin. So how much should I invest into a new violin?

There are so many variables that go into answering this question it’s really hard to say. The best thing to do would be to ask a more experienced player or your violin teacher. You can also go to a music shop and ask for advice

i want to buy violin to my nephew , can you help me?

Posted on November 12th, 2009 by admin in buy violin | 3 Comments »

i would like to buy violin to my nephew who is 8 years old , anybody can help me to find a good site to buy it online with good price? and how shall i choose it ?

You may want to try a site like musicalmart.net. They have very nice beginner violins starting at about $50. We bought one for our daughter from there and she has had it since she has had it for about 3 years with absolutely no problems. They also have a useful sizing guide for helping you to determine the violin size that is best for your child. I will include that link in the source list below. The sites that were recommended already have violins that are in the hundreds and even thousands of dollars range. I would personally stay away from that when it comes to finding a violin for a beginner especially when the beginner is 8 years old. The violins offered at musicalmart are nice and come with a 1 year warranty and everything needed to get started, there is really no sense in spending a thousand dollars for one when you can start your child out with one for fifty bucks. I hope this helps. Good luck.

When purchasing a violin to be played as a fiddle, what are some good qualities to look for?

Posted on November 12th, 2009 by admin in violin purchase | 4 Comments »

I don’t want anything expensive – it’s a beginner fiddle. What should I stay away from? What should I look for? Can anyone suggest a good beginner 4/4 that will last a long time and have a good sound? Are there any good ones that come in a variety of colors, like green, purple, or silver?

Don’t buy sight unseen over the Internet.

Go to a violin shop, not a general purpose music store. Tell the sales person that you’re a beginner looking to learn fiddle. Try out a bunch of different fiddles, some in your price range, some a bit higher priced. Even if you can’t play yet, hold them and see how they feel in your hands. Bring a fiddle playing friend with you to help you evaluate the instruments if you possibly can. Get your fiddle playing friend, or the sales person, to play each of the instruments while you listen with your back turned, and choose the fiddle that sounds best to you. Personally, I greatly prefer used fiddles to new ones, the used ones have been "played in" and generally sound better than the shiny brand-new ones in the same price range.

In my experience, good fiddles come in natural wood colors ranging from a light golden to a dark chocolate brown. The fiddles you see on Ebay in green, purple, blue, silver, and so on, are generally cheap instruments covered with thick heavy finish. I wouldn’t buy one, certainly not without trying them out first to see what they sound like.

Don’t forget about the bow! Too often, beginners spend all their money on the fiddle and get a cheap bow, and then wonder why its so hard to play fiddle. If you have only a limited amount of money to spend, you’ll be better off and learn faster with a good bow and a cheap fiddle, rather than a good fiddle and a cheap bow. A good bow is properly balanced and weighted and responds well to do what you want; a cheap badly made bow makes you feel like you have to fight with it to get it to do what you want. Carbon fiber bows, like Coda brand, are relatively inexpensive but excellent quality for the price especially compared to wood bows of the same price.

I need a need a cheap violin?

I want a 4/4 violin less than $40.00, no shipping. If want to sell me one tell or say a good website.

What, a prop to smash in a play?

The cheapest violin I’ve ever seen on eBay was $57 new, with a bow and case.

… Pity the fool that bought it.

How much is this violin worth?

I am brand new to the violin and don’t know much at all about it. I am currently renting one and I would like to know what a fair price is, should I decide to purchase it. It is a Glaesel VI30E4 4/4.

$150-200
