Violins

Anything you need to know about violins.

What is the best violin brand for a beginner?

What should I look for when purchasing a violin?

if your just learning don’t go for a top quality because you could quit and then you just wasted money. I play the viola but its pretty much the same when trying to figure out the instrument that’s best for you. Don’t really look by brand. Go to a music store tell them that your wanting to get a violin and it would be your first and that you want to try all the violins that they have. It will give you a chance to see whats best for you.

Be careful when buying I know Chicago music store will over price and you can get a cheaper brice (usually)

Also be aware of what you want and trust your self and dont buy one because the people are like this is the top violin, best this and that. If you dont want it then dont take it

Where should I buy the violin for my kids to start to learn it in school?

My 9 years old kid start to take the music class in school, and he pick violin as the instrument, I realize that it is much a difference of the price even for student, the local music store sell the violin for at least $180, but the big store like Target only sell it for $99, what is the difference between their product, besides the basic service I can get from the local music store, what is the value add I can get from their product. What is the pro and con for them.
Please give me your experience or suggestions, thanks.

Frankly, any violin you get for less than $250 is going to be a piece of junk, not to mention any violin is going to be hard to re-sell when he grows out of it in a few years – chances are he’s not ready for the full size yet. I suggest renting a violin – you can rent a better one than you can buy, it’s a lot cheaper, and if he sticks with it you can get him a good one in a few years when he’s ready for a full-size.

‘Cheap’ violins (which both of these almost certainly are) have poor sound, poor set up, and have trouble staying in tune, all of which will just lead to frustrate your son.

do you have a suggestion on a mild insecticide I could use to clean my violin case?

Because my violin has been sitting in it’s case for more than 15 years, the shop suggested that I clean out my case with a mild insecticide so any remaining bugs (eating the old bow horse-hair) would be gone with. (I’ve changed the old bow) Any suggestions?

I’m afraid you only have a couple real options here, one is rehairing the bow periodically, and the other is getting a new violin case. There’s not much you can do once the little buggers get in there, unfortunately.

Perhaps someone will have a new alternative, but that’s the advice I get from the local pros in my neck of the woods.

Im 14 and ive masterd bass. so i want to know wahts a good violin thats not cheap that will last?

Pleas tell me a good violin and a good price for a violin that will last past the begining stage

I have personally ordered student instruments from sharmusic.com and swstrings.com. I have never been disappointed. A price range of $150-$200 is the least you would want to spend on an outfit (with case and bow). Anything less and you might need repairs or adjustment right away (broken strings, bridges and pegs, strings set too high). I see students bring ebay junk to school every year and it’s just not worth the trouble.

These models are fine, you might find used ones for less too:

http://www.sharmusic.com/moreinfogroup.asp?t1=hv10044

These are going to be sturdy instruments with a good tone but nothing like a hand-made instrument. As you spend more on outfits the sound will become warmer with a less tinny/nasal quality. You really get what you pay for at these mail order sites.

If you can spend a little more I would upgrade the bow to a carbon-fiber bow. Not a "brazilwood" bow. $100 should get you a decent one. At Shar you can even try out an instrument at home for the cost of shipping. For a really good "Wow, that sounds awesome" violin you’ll need to spend more. Pros always spend at least several 1000, often much more and for good reason. Don’t forget a shoulder rest (try a brand called Kun for less than $20) and a humidifier (Dampit $5 or so) to keep the seams from coming unglued in the winter.

It’s great to have the expert advice of a local dealer, but realize they will mark up the price 100s of dollars every time.

Good Luck!

I want to buy an electric violin. Where should I buy, and how much should I pay?

If there are any experts out there, or people with some time who want to do some internet research, I would be interested in your knowledge.

I am interested in buying an electric violin so I can play with headphones while my significant other is sleeping. I have played the trumpet in college and high school, but I would like to try something different.

I do not need a professional model. "Student quality" would probably work, but I just don’t know the price range I should be looking for.

I love the Yamaha Silent SV200 violin. Relatively quiet and has an earphone out- though if its quiet enough you could hear the strings yourself. If you’re trying to not wake some one- its still not recommended to play in the same room :P

How to buy a good quality Violin?

I need a new violin because my old one broke. I just need to know how to get the better buy of purchasing a violin. Thanks.

Well, the ultimate best option is to find a local music store and go there.

It’s difficult to describe everything to look for online, especially without first being aware of your general price range.

Because of this, I strongly suggest that you go to a music store. You can give them your price range, and they’ll do everything they can to help you find a perfect instrument for your needs. In my experience, many small music store owners and workers play string instruments themselves and have a lot of experience in it.

However, if you can’t find a local music store or for some reason don’t want to go to one, you can look online. My ultimate recommendation for an online purchase is Southwest Strings. They have good quality instruments, decent prices, and their Customer Service is very helpful in describing the ins and outs of the purchase of a new string instrument. I buy most of my music accessories from there, and have used a few of their higher quality instruments.

You can find their phone numbers and such on the website; give them a call, describe your situation, playing ability, price range, etc., and they’ll help

http://www.swstrings.com/Store/Shopping.jsp

A few things to keep in mind when buying an instrument are the wood quality, string quality, fitting quality, back flame (the lines across the back of the instrument), reputability of the maker, etc.

Good luck =)
