I’m interested in learning to play the violin, but I don’t know where to go to get a good one. I’ve looked online and all but that’s not going to help me much. Anything in particular I should be looking for?
Only buy on-line if you know someone who has had success. I have purchased 2 cellos, 1 viola, 2 violins, and 3 guitars from onlineguitar.com. Although they are on ebay, they have their own dedicated web-site. The violin models that I have purchased are DeVilli Antique for $149,and the Merano Artist Model for $99. Both are solid hand carved instruments that have great sound and playability. The company also has money back guarantees with all products. Shipping cost are low and sometimes free.

Don’t buy one off of ebay!! Most violins you get off there cost more in repairs than you pay for the actual instrumentPlease, take my advice on this one. go to your local music store and have them help you find one. They can find the best one for you at the best price for you.

Go to a shop and look around. They will be very helpful. They’re beautiful places. You can go just to look around. You don’t have to buy anything right away.
Online isn’t a good idea.
You should look for an instrument that you like. One that you like the looks of, the feel of, and the sound of. We (violinists) spend a lot of time with our instruments, so much that it’s almost like a relationship. I tell people that buying a violin is like adopting a puppy. You wouldn’t do that online. Go to a shop and wait till you find an instrument that you are drawn to. Then the instrument will adopt you.
Good luck!

DO NOT BUY A VIOLIN OFF EBAY OR SECOND HAND. (unless you know a lot about violins ).
Violins have to be set up correctly : pegs have to be fitted, soundpost and bridge have to be placed in the correct postion. This is usually not done well at the factory.
Only buy a violin from a proper violin shop so that it is set up correctly. A beginners outfit will cost about $250 ; this will include violin, bow, case, rosin and shoulder rest. Buy an electronic tuner for $20 so that your violin is always in tune.
Do not buy it from a general music shop either ; they usually know nothing about violins.
Take somebody with you who can play a violin when you go to the violin shop so you can listen to a few. You can only judge a violin by its sound ; not its appearance or the price.Sometimes a cheaper violin will sound better than an expensive one.
