You may want to try a site like musicalmart.net. They have very nice beginner violins starting at about $50. We bought one for our daughter from there and she has had it since she has had it for about 3 years with absolutely no problems. They also have a useful sizing guide for helping you to determine the violin size that is best for your child. I will include that link in the source list below. The sites that were recommended already have violins that are in the hundreds and even thousands of dollars range. I would personally stay away from that when it comes to finding a violin for a beginner especially when the beginner is 8 years old. The violins offered at musicalmart are nice and come with a 1 year warranty and everything needed to get started, there is really no sense in spending a thousand dollars for one when you can start your child out with one for fifty bucks. My 9 years old kid start to take the music class in school, and he pick violin as the instrument, I realize that it is much a difference of the price even for student, the local music store sell the violin for at least $180, but the big store like Target only sell it for $99, what is the difference between their product, besides the basic service I can get from the local music store, what is the value add I can get from their product. What is the pro and con for them.

Frankly, any violin you get for less than $250 is going to be a piece of junk, not to mention any violin is going to be hard to re-sell when he grows out of it in a few years – chances are he’s not ready for the full size yet. I suggest renting a violin – you can rent a better one than you can buy, it’s a lot cheaper, and if he sticks with it you can get him a good one in a few years when he’s ready for a full-size.

‘Cheap’ violins (which both of these almost certainly are) have poor sound, poor set up, and have trouble staying in tune, all of which will just lead to frustrate your son.

If there are any experts out there, or people with some time who want to do some internet research, I would be interested in your knowledge.

I am interested in buying an electric violin so I can play with headphones while my significant other is sleeping. I have played the trumpet in college and high school, but I would like to try something different.

I do not need a professional model. "Student quality" would probably work, but I just don’t know the price range I should be looking for.

I love the Yamaha Silent SV200 violin. Relatively quiet and has an earphone out- though if its quiet enough you could hear the strings yourself. If you’re trying to not wake some one- its still not recommended to play in the same room

Like you saw in those sites, violins can range from 50$ to a million(which are very rare but are out there) It really depends on how good you are which decides which violin you buy. If you r a beginner, then just get like a 150$ one. However if you have been playing for more than 5 years, then I would suggest at least a thousand $ violin. This may seem like a lot but it rly isnt if you want to get a decent violin that will rly bring out your tone. The violin you found on Ebay is probably in rly bad shape n I wouldn’t suggest it. If you are happy with a 200$ violin then I say go for it.

I am a late stater. Actually when i was a teenager, i practice violin for 1 year then i left it to focus on my education. Now i am 29 again i got desire to start practice and learn violin again. Please suggest me, which violin to buy (online) which is setup and tuned and music notes and and learning software if available.I am thinking to learn in home myself from available software or music notes. is it possible or not? I hardly remember my teenage practice to violin

I had a former student who was my best violinist and her parents bought her a viola by mistake, so she learned to play and made honor orchestra her first year!

I am looking to buy a violin. I know it’s better to buy from a local shop where I can look and test it but the only one I found near me, Johnson Strings, is too expensive, even its cheapest one.

So I will probably buy online, and so far I’ve found stringworks (stringworks.com), southwest strings (swstrings.com) and shar (sharmusic.com).
