I need a need a cheap violin?

Posted on November 12th, 2009 by admin in cheap violins | 6 Comments »

I want a 4/4 violin less than $40.00, no shipping. If want to sell me one tell or say a good website.

What, a prop to smash in a play?

The cheapest violin I’ve ever seen on eBay was $57 new, with a bow and case.

… Pity the fool that bought it.

Where can i buy the cheapest violins here in Negros Oriental? anyone can help me?

Where can i find free or super cheap sheet music for the violin?

I play violin and every website i find only gives the price or is a really old song. Where can i find todays music for violin?? Ive looked everywhere and cant seem to find anything. Sources would help a lot..

Maybe part of the problem is that "today’s" music is under COPYRIGHT; if you get it for free, you might be breaking the law.

How can you tell a good quality violin from a cheap one?

Posted on October 27th, 2009 by admin in cheap violins | 3 Comments »

How it sounds is the most obvious answer – but not the only one. Because a good violin that has been sitting for a while without being played will sound flat and the tone will be dull.

If you find a fiddle with good wood and carpentry, precision in the placing of the sound peg (inside) if the fingerboard looks good – find out if it has been played a lot and recently. If the answer is no, some sellers will be willing to let you return it after six months if the tone does not come alive – or you can takea chance and try bargaining down the price.

Obviously, the final factor is the sound – but how it sounds when you first play it may not tell the whole story.

And by the way – cheap violins can sometimes be very good, and expensive violins can be very bad. Price does not always tell the story either.

does anyone know were you can get a cheap violin and violin leasons in jacksonville,fl and in duval?

I would recommend contacting the Jacksonville Youth Orchestra (http://www.jaxsymphony.org/jsyo/index.php) for local recommendations. Many youth orchestras keep a list of all the teachers that have students performing in the orchestra, so they may be able to help you find someone to study with. As a violin teacher myself, in the Orlando area, I’d suggest finding and interviewing a teacher and then getting his or her recommendations on purchasing an instrument locally. They will be able to give you valuable advice as to where to go and what to buy. Please don’t think too cheap, as with a violin you definitely get what you pay for. Over the years I’ve seen my beginners’ success often very strongly correlate with the quality of the first instrument. Could you imagine investing all that money for lessons, and many many hours of practice time with no hope of ever sounding very good because the instrument is not capable of sounding good? It is a fallacy that it is fine to start off with a $100 violin and then move up when progress comes. Progress will happen much faster with a better quality instrument.

Understand, though, that you shouldn’t go to your local music dealer and buy their $900 beginner violin. If you have that kind of money to spend, then get advice from a teacher as to how to spend it and you can get something even better. But you can often get the $900 Scherl & Roth or Glaesel that a local deal might have for a couple hundred dollars less online. Or even better, if you are willing to buy a used instrument in good condition, you may be able to find it through consignment or craigslist.org for $300-400 – sometimes even less.

In short, get help in purchasing an instrument. Do not give anyone any money until a professional has assessed the instrument for you.

Violin, Cheap but nice?

I need a fairly cheap but decent violin since my parents dont fully beleive that i will stick to it… is renting the way to go? and i need a bow, rosin, shoulder-rest, chin rest, violin(duh xD)and case right? any thing else needed? thanks in advance!

I am a violin teacher, and often I recommend renting an instrument to beginners. So many people find that violin is not for them, and if you rent, you are not out any money. In my area, you can rent a violin for VERY cheap ($10??) for the first couple of months, then you have an option of renting to own, which is fairly reasonable. Plus, they offer insurance for loss or theft, which is great if you’re taking the instrument to school and there’s a risk involved.

A new student instrument isn’t really all that expensive, as far as instruments go. You can get a complete student outfit (good quality at a VIOLIN SHOP, not a general music store) for about $200-500. You’ll need the violin, a bow, a shoulder rest and a nice case. I recommend an extra set of strings, a tuner (about $20) and a metronome (about $10) (you can find tuner/metronome combination units that work well). You will also need a music stand. I have a sturdy stand that I paid $40 for, but all of my students use it. You can get a nice stand for about $15 or so. DO NOT prop your music on your case on the bed and sit on the bed when you practice. This will form bad habits that are difficult to break.

Should I purchase a cheap violin?

Posted on October 19th, 2009 by admin in cheap violins | 4 Comments »

I saw some violins on ebay for $50. That’s pretty cheap. The feedback was all positive, though. I used to play violin as a child, but lost the skill later. Should I go ahead and purchase a cheap violin to practice on or spend more on one that might be more worth it?

Are there any violins that are pretty good that I can spend around $150-$200 on until I can afford a better one?

Thanks for any advice :)

I suggest you find a reputable store that sells moderately priced instruments. They will let you play several so you can tell if they have the tone you want.

I would advise NOT buying a musical instrument online. There is no way to tell if the instrument is "dead" or "live" on the internet.

Yes, it is sometimes possible to pick up a good instrument cheaply, but be sure to play it first. Be sure you have choices.

I’ve seen some reports of good, cheap violins coming out of China now. Perhaps you can find a brick and mortar store that stocks them.
