Technically the best violin brand is stradavarius. an 18th century producer...

and one can be yours.. for the sum of somewhere between 1-10 million dollars :D

Seriously though as the above post mentioned, stringworks is good stuff. I know several folks who've gotten good instruments from them, and if you need it they can even provide parts, like bridges and pegs, etc.
References :
Stay away from Ebay. There are so many cheap violins there, but they don't stay in tune, have crappy strings, aren't set up correctly, many won't play at all, and will be an endless source of frustration. In fact, don't buy a violin from ANYWHERE online that doesn't offer 100% money back garruntee if you're unhappy with it.

I recommend Stringworks (http://www.stringworks.com). They make high quality instruments, and they give you a two-week trial period - they will send you the instrument, and you have two weeks to try it out and see if you want to purchase it. They are set up correctly and have good strings. I bought mine from there, and I never plan to part with it. My teacher said it's easily worth twice what I paid for it.
References :
Whatever you do, don't buy it from Wal-Mart. That's like buying Creme Brule at McDonalds. Anyways, when shopping for an instrument online, make sure that you get it from someone that is trustworthy. If it is from a family, it is probably a good thing and if it is used it's usually bot bad. Check to make sure that it's not from someone that just buys a bunch of violins and never plays them and just sells them online, not a good sign. Another thing is to read the customer reviews and try to email the seller or something. My friend bought an oboe from a seller that had it in the family and then refurbished it and it looks good as new. Good luck.
