That’s Incredible! – Friends Of P. (Demo).
Note: Very first demo of the Rentals hit “Friend of P.” prior to the moog and violins aspect of that recording were added.
That’s Incredible! was the very first incarnation of Weezer bassist Matt Sharp’s side project called The Rentals. Recorded by Tom Grimley at his studio Poop Alley in L.A. in April 1994 (a month prior to the first Weezer record debuting), the ‘That’s Incredible!’ demos form the basis of what would become the first Rentals album ‘Return Of The Rentals’ in 1995.
The line-up of ‘That’s Incredible!’ consisted of Sharp (vocals, bass and lead guitar), Weezer bandmate Patrick Wilson (drums), That Dog’s Rachel Haden (female vocals) and Supersport 2000′s Rod Cervera (rhythm guitar). Out of this line-up, only Sharp and Cervera would become part of The Rentals, as other commitments prevented Haden and Wilson from becoming full-time participants in what would become a more time-consuming project for Sharp once signed to Maverick Records in early 1995.

Oh, I never said …
Oh, I never said that Matt wasn’t an ass. In fact, I’d say that Matt is (or at least WAS) quite a big in many different ways. And I really don’t know the details of his personal life enough to comment on his relationships at the time, although you are probably quite right. But I don’t really want to start in on his behavior or his character here…after all, it’s been nearly 17 years since he recorded these songs. He may be quite different now. Lord knows, Rivers is.
You are the man max …
You are the man max, but any casual observer can see that Matt (though brilliant) is an that goes thru girls like ron jeremy. Every rentals album was the result of a broken heart, and I guess that songs about time will be no different.
Yeah, actually I …
Yeah, actually I knew Rachel way back in the day, and through her I met Petra and the rest of That Dog. I also knew Matt and the rest of Weezer separately but to a much lesser degree. This was all around 1992/1993 before and after both bands (and Beck) got signed to Geffen. Don’t think I ever met either Cherie or Rod but it’s possible…I can’t really remember. I know I did see Supersport 2000 play sometime towards the end of 1994 pre-Rentals and thought they were great.
Why couldn’t I have …
Why couldn’t I have run into these kids around 94 when I finished college? I would have shelved any ideas of grad school and become a musician just for the privalege of being in a “side project” band with any of them!
I’m jealous of your …
I’m jealous of your knowledge, do you know any of them? I REALLY got back into the rentals ROTR era about a year before the talk of a reunion around 2005. I ran into a email hyperlink of Cherie’s and sent off a fan email asking if it was even her. IT WAS! She later informed me the reunion rumors were true but matt would be the only original one and she and rod were not interested. But i was excited rachel was going to be involved.
Petra had played …
Petra had played and both she and Rachel sang on the record as a favor to Matt and Tom Grimley, who recorded the album, but neither of them really had any intention of becoming full-fledged members due to That Dog’s schedule as well as all the legal red tape. When Rachel did the ‘That’s Incredible!’ demos, she most likely thought of it as a fun weekend type side project and not the big deal it became. I’m sure Matt would have wanted both in the band if he could have gotten them…
As far as the …
As far as the line-up of The Rentals goes, it’s important to remember that “The Rentals” project was actually a solo deal Matt Sharp had with Maverick…and as far as I know, the Geffen people weren’t too pleased with the fact that both Pat Wilson (Weezer drummer) and Petra appeared in the video since it hadn’t been cleared before hand. In fact, they actually had to airbrush the heads off Pat and Petra in promotional posters for the single, due to DGC being stubborn about it.
Thanks for the …
Thanks for the comments man…I appreciate them!
Max you are a god. …
Max you are a god. or at least the official rentals archivist. I love this early stuff but never understood. . . . .
why rachel had prior commitments but her sister petra in the same band (that dog) did not? seems like rachel got screwed out of some much deserved exposure. Then Cherie got screwed. And when Rachel comes back for the reunion, it only ends up as a cool tour but the EP fizzles and Matt loses the great Sarah Raddle too. I see a trend here. . . Enjoy great bands while they last.
